The Project
Age of Comics: The Golden Years is a medium-light worker placement game published by Lirius Games. Its crowdfunding campaign reached 894% funding, and the insert work centered on a component-heavy release with premium presentation expectations.
That made the project about more than simple organization. The insert needed to handle player materials, expansion content, cards, tiles, and a very high token count while also doing justice to the mini comic-book tiles that give the game so much of its identity.
Insert Challenge
Setup time stayed central throughout the design. The box needed to hold money, ideas, VP tokens, cards, tiles, player materials, and expansion content in a way players could read immediately instead of sorting through multiple mixed component families.
Presentation mattered just as much. The mini comic-book tiles are one of the most distinctive parts of the product, so the insert could not treat them like generic filler components hidden under the rest of the box.
Design Decisions
Player components were separated into their own trays to reduce setup friction. Expansion components received dedicated storage as well, keeping optional content from muddying the core-game layout.
The large token tray was designed to work directly on the table, while the mini comic-book tiles were placed so they stayed accessible and visually well presented inside the insert.
Production Considerations
For a campaign-backed release, the insert still had to stay coherent for pack-out and fulfillment. That meant preserving fast access and clean visual grouping without turning the box into a collection of one-off compartments.
Cards, tokens, tiles, player trays, and expansion materials all needed a place that felt intentional and easy to understand at a glance.
Outcome
Blackform delivered a storage system with separate player trays, dedicated expansion storage, and a table-ready token tray, while keeping the comic tiles accessible and visually prominent. The result improved setup speed without sacrificing the presentation of the game’s signature components.
